Mon 7th Feb 2000: Friendly match home to Farnham & Guildford. Farnham & Guildford, who play in the Southern League, came to Chesham for a friendly (that is to say "non-league"!) match on Monday. Both sides had turned out high-calibre teams, and it was definitely going to be a close-run thing.

Chesham started playing uphill, but got off to a shaky start, and conceded a goal within the first couple of minutes. Undeterred, they struck back to level the game. The rest of the first half was very closely-fought, with both teams getting to within a yard of their opponents' goal before being closed down by the opposing team's defenders. Half-time: 1-1.

Chesham knew that even with downhill advantage, the game would not be any easier in the second half, and so it proved. The first few minutes consisted of tussles in the midfield, but then a burst of intense pressure in the Chesham goalmouth coupled with a subbing error gave ex-Chesham striker Ed Eilerts de Haan a clear shot at goal to make it 2-1 to Farnham & Guildford.

Chesham then piled on the pressure and threw everything they had at their opponents, but still the Farnham & Guildford defence - led by Great Britain Womens Masters captain Clare Ash - held out. Finally, a superb solo effort by Chesham striker Peter Hollingbery breached the F&G defences, only for his shot to go under the goal. Everyone broke to the surface to hear the sound of the final whistle, 2-1 the final score. We look forward to the rematch . . .
