Pembroke Annual Tournament
by Penny Simon

On Saturday 18th September Pembroke Octopush Club hosted its second Women’s Tournament, with teams travelling to West Wales from Bristol, Northampton and London.

The tournament was a great success, and fortunate to be sponsored once again by L’Oreal (UK), Vogue/Clarins and Wisebuys, with new sponsors, Llwellyn Sports, Ultraswim (Chattems) and Paul Murray Plc who provided gifts for all the competitors.

In the first match London Angels, (a mix of the London Ladies and Spectrum Angels teams) held a very promising Pembroke Women’s team at bay and won eventually by 4 goals to 1. In the next game Wahine Warriors faced Bristol and West, the two most experienced teams in the competition. This produced some excellent play but Bristol finally overcame the Wahine Warriors by 3 goals to 1.

Pembroke in their second game were no match for the Wahine Warriors who beat them convincingly 10 goals to nil. Bristol having also warmed up well, kept control of their game against London Angels - by this time one woman down, due to illness - and battled bravely against the Wahine Warriors, but could not hold them, losing 1 goal to 5.

The final result, needing no play-off, was Bristol taking home the Challenge Trophy in first place, Wahine Warriors in second, with London Angels third and Pembroke fourth.

Prizes were presented by Keith Dunkinson in the Old Cross Saws Inn, with a vote of thanks from Penny Simon for all those teams who made it to Pembroke and the men who gallantly refereed the games and especially to Colin and June Deller for all their hard work on the day.

Plans for next year’s Pembroke Women’s Tournament to be on Saturday 16th September 2000. Hope all you ladies out there can make it!
