Chesham go Italian in style

Chesham Octopush Club entered two teams in the first underwater hockey tournament ever to be held in Italy, the City Of Bologna trophy .

Prospects were good for an all-Chesham final, as at the end of the first day's qualifying rounds, Chesham were first and third, with the firsts winning all their games and the seconds losing only to Chesham firsts.

But it was not to be. The firsts lost their semi-final play-off next day against a French team led by the former France captain and bolstered by two French national players.

Meanwhile, a slow start for Chesham seconds saw them lose a hard-fought game against a very determined Italian first team.

Both Chesham teams went on to win their other two play-off games, to claim third and fifth places respectively.

Sweet revenge as Triads are foiled

Chesham OC recorded a resounding 7-3 victory on Monday against Leamington Triads to avenge a shock 6-7 defeat by them earlier in the year. This result maintains Chesham’s third-placed position in the Eastern & Central League.

GB team forward Sara Grenside and UK Barbarians forward Ed Eilerts de Haan were both on target as Chesham held Leamington to 2-2 at half-time. The Chesham players then capitalised on downhill advantage to hit home a further five goals while conceding only one.

Chesham Octopush Club will be holding a novice underwater hockey evening on Monday 17th August at Chesham Leisure Centre. Equipment and tuition will be provided, and everyone is welcome. Contact Martin Reed for further information on 01494 434313.

Chesham go from strength to strength

Players from Chesham Octopush Club have been achieving international success at recent tournaments in the Orkney Isles and The Netherlands.

Chesham gained an excellent second place in the annual five-a-side underwater hockey tournament in the Orkneys. The five – Douglas Cuthill (Captain), Ed Eilerts de Haan, Sara Grenside, Martin Reed and Keith Taylor – were defeated only by Edinburgh, the British Octopush Association’s most improved team for 1998.

Chesham were rewarded with a miniature replica of an Orkney standing stone to add to their growing trophy haul.

Over the May Day Bank Holiday, three members of Chesham OC helped the UK Barbarians invitation touring team to a creditable fourth place in their division at a tournament in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Ed Eilerts de Haan, Martin Reed and Sara Grenside – the club’s first GB international – faced tough opposition from Dutch clubs, as well as teams from France and Belgium. The Chesham trio have been selected to represent UK Barbarians in their November tour of South Africa .

Sara in SloveniaGB spot for Sara

A member of the Chesham Octopush Club who only took up the sport in September has landed a spot in the Great Britain women's masters team.

Sara Grenside who also plays for London Ladies and the UK Barbarians, has been selected to play at the World Championships in San Jose, California, next month. A forward, she is the Chesham club's first international.

"I'm very proud and absolutely delighted," said Sara, 33, who is a nurse tutor at the University of Luton and secretary of the Chesham club.

"I love Octopush - otherwise known as Underwater Hockey. It's great fun, a great strategy game and very good for cross-sport fitness."

Sara has also been selected for the UK Barbarians' tour of South Africa in November with clubmates Martin Reed, the Chesham manager and chairman, and Ed Eilerts de Haan.

Chesham Octopush Club sessions are on Monday nights at Chesham Leisure Centre.
