The plan was to convene at Sara’s house at 6pm. Sara picked Ed up on her way through from Luton. Doug arrived in Amersham by train and then had to wait while Martin (who was the only one who hadn’t been to work!) got ready and showered. At Sara’s, those who were hungry made inroads into Sara’s food supply.

We got underway at 8.30pm, having packed the car to the hilt. "We’ll just have to work out how to get Keith’s kit in when we get to Alnwick", said Doug. Sara did the first stint as driver, and - doing ninety most of the way - we were north of Chesterfield within two hours. We stopped for a burger at the motorway services, and Doug and Martin had a shoot ‘em up game in the arcade. Doug took the next stint while Ed and Sara snored in the back. 1.30am saw us hammering on Keith’s door attempting to wake him up; when we finally succeeded WHAT a sight! Ha! With Keith's whisky as a nightcap, we all crashed out very quickly: 300 miles down, 1300 to go!!
