Chesham Octopush Club finished in 5th place out of 13 at the annual
invitation underwater hockey championships in Bologna, Italy recently.
Chesham, one of only three overseas teams to have competed at every Bologna tournament, won their qualifying group comfortably.
Drawn against tournament title holders and fellow group winners the French Men, Chesham fought hard and had their chances to win. Three times the Chesham puck was on the edge of the goal tray only for the French defenders to clear.
But it was heartbreak for Chesham when the French scored a breakaway goal on the left wing with only three minutes left.
A second defeat, 2-0 at the hands of a Bologna home team, put Chesham into the bottom half of the playoffs. Battling performances then saw the Chesham side win all their remaining games. This included a 3-0 win over the Hungarian national side and a golden-goal finale against the French national women’s team.

Chesham Octopush Club came a creditable 10th in the Memorial Mesareca
tournament in Slovenia. The Chesham resources were split between
this and the national championships at Crystal Palace, so it was a less experienced team that
made the trip.
As Chesham were fourth in 1998 and third in 1999 tournaments, there was excitement among the side, which had two playing in their first ever tournament but, in a very strong group, Chesham were pipped for a top eight place when they lost their play-off against the Hungarian national 3-2.
By this time, newcomers Ben Coles and Sarah White and both scored as wins against the Slovenian national women’s team and the youth team gave them that tenth spot.

Chesham Octopush Club were thrown in at the deep end as they started their new
campaign in the London League with a trip to star-studded West Wickham, rated as top
underwater hockey side in the UK.
Undaunted by the team packed with GB internationals, Chesham gave them a good run for their money and came close to sharing the honours. Chesham should have been given an early penalty when Darren Bennett's defence-splitting pass went to a home player who had the wrong colour bat - white (Chesham) instead of black (Wickham).
Wickham edged ahead with a goal just before half-time and added another in the second half, a superb solo effort from one of their internationals.
Bennett pulled one back for Chesham with two minutes to go, giving Chesham a highly respectable scoreline against their classy opposition.
