Monday 11th September 2000

Martin R: "Steve and Clare were phoning at eight, and I had turned off my phone to save the battery. I forgot to set an alarm, but woke up anyway. Looked at my watch - 7.45 - good, haven't missed their call. Paul was also awake, and Martin F and Julie were also up, as they were going early into town. Just as the call came in from Clare, Eryl emerged from the Puckaholics' bungalow, so the five of us decided to head together into town to meet Steve and Clare."

Martin F: "I find it so amazing - I'm not sure I should say this - but the bus service is so reliable, they always turn up on time"

Martin R: "We got to the bus stop at 9.05 - missed the bus by four minutes. The next bus didn't turn up (we subsequently worked out from the Italian timetable that it was a "summer holidays only" service that had been withdrawn on 28th August).

Eventually a bus trundled into sight just before quarter to ten. Fortunately I had earlier phoned Alison to ask her if she wanted to join us for breakfast, so at least she would be there to meet Steve and Clare at the Nettuno. The bus arrived at the edge of the town centre and we all jumped ship and sprinted up a pedestrianised street to the city square, where we found Steve, Clare and Alison waiting for us."
